1 Silk masks are reusable and environmentally sustainable
Silk is a natural fibre, and is biodegradable. The process used for silk production has a significantly low carbon footprint compared to the manufacturing of synthetic materials like cotton or polyester. On the other hand, disposable masks are generally made from polypropylene, which is a type of plastic. Plastic takes hundreds of years to break down and decompose. “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” has been all the rage in recent years, and disposable masks are the embodiment of “non-reusable”. Have you ever experienced ear loops snapping off your masks? No such problem with silk masks as silk is a natural fibre, which means that it is extremely durable and will not break or tear apart easily. Most silk masks have adjustable ear loops for you to customise the fit of your mask for utmost comfort.
2 Silk masks are breathable and gentle on the skin
Silk does not absorb as much moisture as other fabrics like cotton, making it less prone to odours forming. Silk masks will make sure you feel fresh and stay dry throughout the day. With the absence of moisture and humidity build up, the chances of maskne breakouts decreases greatly. Silk is also cooling, soft and hypoallergenic. If you have underlying skin conditions like eczema or rashes, silk will definitely not aggravate your skin as the soft and smooth material reduces skin chafing, a common trigger to skin issues. Disposable masks are most commonly made from polypropylene which is not as breathable as silk. They trap humidity, sweat and bacteria under the mask which leads to higher chances of bacteria forming on your skin, leading to breakouts. Of course, it is advised to wash your silk mask with delicate soap after every use, for hygiene purposes.
3 Silk masks can be as effective as disposable masks
Disposable masks, also known as surgical masks, are effective in protecting the wearer’s nose and mouth from water droplets that might carry viruses and bacteria. They are able to filter the large particles in the air, giving extra protection to the wearer. Did you know that silk masks can protect you to the same extent as disposable masks? Mulberry silk is anti-bacterial, making it a great companion for combating viruses. Every BURR mask comes with two pieces of PM2.5 Activated Carbon filters that can be slotted in the mask pocket. These mask filters are able to filter particles that are as tiny as 2.5 micrometres, which are smaller than dust and pollen. The addition of the filter adds another layer of protection against small particles and viruses.
